This was in addition to Ms. Lalita Kamashastri teaching Bharat Natyam. Mr. Kak, a crafts teacher, started teaching cane work to under-privileged women living around the residence of Ms. Rao. Thus the seeds for an institute to promote arts and crafts were sown in 9 Janpath, New Delhi. Upon the demise of Swami Shivananda of the Divine Life Society, Rishikesh, Ms. Rao, his disciple, ensured that the seed blooms into a befitting memorial. The Swami Sivananda Memorial Institute of Fine Arts and Crafts (abridged as SSMI) was born in 1964.

SSMI found a permanent residence in a four acre plot located in East Avenue, East Punjabi Bagh New Delhi.
