Founded in 1964 by Mrs. K. Varalakshmi Rao, SSMI is a secular, independent, non-profit society registered under the Societies Act 1860 (Regd. No S 2499/1964). SSMI is not affiliated to any national or international organization. Registered as the Swami Sivananda Institute of Fine Arts and Crafts, SSMI is managed by a Trust Board and an Executive Committee.
Addressing the problems of deprivation and its correlation with under-performance and deprivation since children form the under-privileged families are deprived of almost everything from nutrition to space.
Filling the empathy gap in between the teacher and the taught in the case of pre-school education of children living in slums.
Empowerment of women is the essence of all the activities of SSMI. An important focus areas is generating income for women through production and marketing and not just training. SSMI has launched a brand “SUBHA – a new dawn for women” to provide a marketing outlet to women from the under-privileged families.
In order to introduce the Kuchupudi tradition of dance drama in Delhi, the founder of SSMI Ms. Varalakshmi Rao went to Kuchupudi and brought back a teacher. This was in addition to Ms. Lalita Kamashastri teaching Bharat Natyam. Mr. Kak, a crafts teacher, started teaching cane work to under-privileged women living around the residence of Ms. Rao. Thus the seeds for an institute to promote arts and crafts were sown in 9 Janpath, New Delhi. Upon the demise of Swami Shivananda of the Divine Life Society, Rishikesh, Ms. Rao, his disciple, ensured that the seed blooms into a befitting memorial. The Swami Sivananda Memorial Institute of Fine Arts and Crafts (abridged as SSMI) was born in 1964.
SSMI found a permanent residence in a four acre plot located in East Avenue, East Punjabi Bagh New Delhi. A vocational Training Center sprung up with funds from MISEROR B H e V, a German charitable institution. Primary and Secondary school ad well as pre-school buildings came up with donations and various fund raising events.
A training cum production institute affiliated to the Board of technical Education, Govt. of NCT of Delhi. Training and production activities are still on, but in a different format.
Enabling the women from the beneficiary community to deliver supplementary nutrition or mid-day meals.
Providing comprehensive ambulatory care at the door step.

To improve the quality of life of the under-privileged women, youth and children through research, promotion, provision of services and skill development in the fields of education, health, nutrition, environment and livelihood.
